I guess a winter fire in frigid weather would have been harsher, but that looks plenty harsh to me. As you say, life and hope.
That's the first paw-paw I've ever seen, despite a song fragment, learnt as a child, from my mother:
"Where oh where is dear little Susie" (x4, w/ melodic variations)
"Way down yonder in the paw-paw patch!"
It sounds like they may (have) grow(n) in the South, Alabama specifically.
If the MI climate doesn't kill it outright, it may actually produce more fruit because of the harsher conditions. Be interesting to find out....
