I finally conceded defeat and saw the movie this afternoon. While it takes memes from various sources, the movie I find myself thinking of when doing a one on one comparison is "The Incredible Mr. Limpet" with Don Knotts.
Here are some comparisons that come to mind: -Unhappy human -> happy non human Mr. Limpet sings a song about preferring to be a fish, in Avatar the human has paralyzed legs.
-live action human -> animated non human Mr. Limpet uses magic, Avatar uses technology indistinguishable from magic.
-ordinary human -> non human with special power Mr. Limpet, in fish form has a "Throm" a powerful voice he can use for attack and defense. Avatar has mind links with various animals.
-The non human form gets the girl. The again, I suppose the hero always gets the girl.
-Bad guy is the standard evil for the time of the movie. Mr. Limpet uses the post WWII standard evil Nazis. Today the standard villain is the "destroy the planet for money" profiteer.
-Major battle scene where the non human force is critical to victory. In Mr. Limpet, he uses his "Throm" to defeat U-Boats attacking a convoy. In Avatar, he uses his mind link with a flying beast to defeat the evil exploiters.
I could probably think up a couple more, but that is enough silliness for now.
Still haven't managed to get out to see this, but have had some interest. Now tho? Have to admit that level rose a bit more than expected :) For once a comparison that didn't turn me off to the concept *grin*
Hmm....ya know, it's been a few months since we watched Limpet. May be time to pull it back out....
