May 16 I flew to Washington, D.C. to see the Team America model rocket flyoffs (TARC). Two eggs 750 feet and 45 second flight, exactly. Eggs returned unbroken and points for errors in altitude and time. I went this year because my club had a hometown team that qualified and because that team was going to give an extra talk on how they built their rocket. Unfortunately their engine chuffed a moment before lift off costing the model 40 feet of altitude and then caught a thermal on the way down adding 15 seconds to the flight for a total of 70 points(time error is doubled). They were disappointed but qualified, recovering the eggs intact. The winners had scores of less than 20. We'll get 'em next year.
The two representatives from the Air Force who spoke at the awards ceremony have since been fired.
May 23 I rode with Peter and Xap to MARCON. We had a great time. I really enjoyed Tom's concert signed by Judi. Judi was hit by a student the week before and now Tom is in the hospital for an injured leg. I had a marvelous time at panels in the varied tracks of the Con. The dead dog filk had an excellent mix of talent and listener's. Of course, I got to be the meanie who kicked Peter and Xap out at only 9 pm.
I spent Monday sick, recovering from the Con.
Tuesday, the 27th, I gave a talk about model rockets to Mr. Chapman's class. 45 minutes simply is not enough time.
The next weekend, May 31-June 1, was the "MAD COW" regional model rocket contest at the Cowatorium. The weather on Saturday was too windy to fly much, but on Sunday we were able to fly. The Bumbling Brothers Flying Circus qualified in every event. I spent Monday and Tuesday at home, sick as a dog.
Wednesday I, and fellow club members, helped Mr. Chapman's class fly their school rockets. We had a great time. I also had the curious satisfaction of peeling off the sunburn from the previous weekend.
Last weekend I mostly rested. Thursday I am going in to the dentist for a crown. The next two weekends are rocket contests. I am contest director of the second one.
Then it is off to Pondfilk on the Empire Builder with over night accommodations on the train.
Anyway, that is why I haven't posted in a while.
