What's in a name? or computer geekery

Now, I don't consider myself a computer geek. Granted, I took Fortran classes back in the day and wasn't all that terrified of the dreaded "format" statements. I do know how to use Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, but my use of my home computer relies on canned programs like Norton anti-virus.

In late July my computer got infected by a rather nasty virus or worm that was seriously chewing on my computer's ability to do anything useful. My trusty Norton program was stymied because it wasn't able to delete the virus. It did point me in the direction of the virus location (my system 32 files) which I further narrowed down using file modification/creation dates, but I was not able to delete it either. After much fiddling around I found I could change the name of the offending file. So I changed it from a dll file to a text file named Fred. After restarting the computer in safe mode, I deleted Fred.

My computer seems happy now. A rose by any other name would smell as sweet. Or not, ask anyone who has studied the placebo effect.
